Halloween is around the corner and although it’s different this year some eyecare rules still apply. If you are thinking of grabbing some over-the-counter Halloween contact lenses to complete your spooky costume you may be getting more of a trick than a treat!
Contact lenses are regulated-medical devices and they can cause eye infections, corneal abrasions, and even vision loss if not used safely. Cheap costume lenses may seem like an appealing option at first but when you consider that over-the-counter contacts are not regulated and may be using unbreathable material that doesn’t allow enough oxygen to the cornea (front surface of the eye) the risk of suffering permanent damage to your eyes is simply not worth it!
If you are looking for some safe and fun colored contact lenses, book a appointment to be fit with one of our Optometrist-approved Halloween costume lenses at our office to add the perfect finishing touch to an awesome costume!
Costume eye makeup should be used with the same care as it can often be a lot thicker and heavier than regular makeup. Be sure to use hypoallergenic makeup and make up remover especially around the eyes. This is also true for those false lashes. If your looking for some friendly eye makeup and eyecare products, stop by and we can help give you options that will keep your eyes in great shape. Avoid glitter and jewels near the eye. For children who are wearing any makeup, keep hypoallergenic wipes handy to clean your their face should the makeup begin to run down their face during the course of the evening.
From virtual costume parties to drive-in haunted houses, however you chose to celebrate, remember to stay safe and don’t let an eye infection be the scariest part of your Halloween! If you end up with any eye problems, come see our Optometrists. Medically necessary visits are covered by Alberta Health Care.
