In fact, cataracts are more common than other eye conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma combined. A cataract is condition in which the lens of the eye becomes cloudier resulting in blurred or reduced vision.
So how can we reduce our risk of cataracts or take preventative measure to slow down progression?
It is never too early to start protecting your eye health
Stop smoking
There seems to be no end to the list of health risks related to cigarette smoking. Eye health is no exception. Studies have proven that smoking does increase your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration.
Eat Well to See Well
It is important to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Increased blood sugar levels or diabetes increases the risk of early onset cataracts. Consider a healthy diet full of leafy green vegetables such as spinach and kale, orange bell peppers, eggs, salmon, almonds, walnuts, berries, kiwis and sweet potatoes weekly. Aim to eat foods that are rich in anti-oxidants to keep up your immunity and fight off radicals. If eating a healthy diet is challenging, ask our Optometrists about eye vitamins with Lutein and Zeaxanthin help to maintain the health of the macula and maintain clear vision.
Protect your eyes from the sunand blue light
Protect your eyes from the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun and blue light off screens and lighting sources. UV light increases you risk of cataracts. Sunglasses should be worn all year round. Limit exposure when the sun is at its highest and wear UVA/UVB protective sunglasses, a wide brimmed hat and use sunscreen. Start in childhood by having your children wear sunglasses from infancy.
