Happy World Optometry Day! Today we celebrate our profession as Optometrists. We are humbled to be able to help our patients see better and improve their quality of life through vision and eye health.
So how do you become an Optometrist? After completing an undergraduate degree, we go to Optometry school for an additional 4 years + residency (optional). That`s a lot of eye school that allows us to not only prescribe glasses and contact lenses but we also diagnose, manage and treat eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye disease, eye infections, eye allergies, trauma, macular degeneration, eye emergencies to name a few.
We love meeting other Optometrists and attending conferences. In this pic we are @vision.expo where we got to meet @drjenandjuice @lumenis
As Optometrists, we are passionate about eye health & educating you using our social media platforms & during your appointments. We believe in early detection & prevention to maintaining optimal eye health starting in infancy. If you haven`t had an eye exam this year, this is a great opportunity to book your appointment today.
So today let`s be grateful for our gift of sight. #worldoptometryday

Did you know you should be wearing sunglasses all year around to protect your eyes from the sun’s harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays. As the effects of UV rays are cumulative, our Optometrists encourage you to start having your kids wear their sunglasses during infancy & continue all year round even in the winter. Kids do have a tendency to take them off but it`s all about building a habit. Simply wearing a hat is not enough.
UV rays can accelerate conditions like cataracts (clouding of the natural lens in the eye) and Age-regulated Macular Degeneration (AMD) which can lead to permanent vision loss.
What to look for when purchasing your kids sunglasses:
1. Must block 100% UVA & UVB - read your labels!
2. Select a frame that fits comfortably.
3. Larger lenses provide more coverage reducing sun damage to the eyes & the skin around the eyes (skin cancer).
3. Transition lenses are ideal if your child wears glasses as these lenses change color based on the level of UV.
4. Polarization reduces glare coming off reflective surfaces like water or pavement.
If your interested in sunglasses for your child, book in for a complimentary consultation with our Optical team who can to help you select the right pair. #kidseyecareyyc

Does it surprise you that some infants need glasses? Well, it`s often a shock to many parents.
Meet these adorable twins who are here to help raise awareness on the importance of infant eye exams in order to help catch eye problems early, while your child`s eyes are still developing.
Babies who have poor vision may be delayed in their development milestones, inattentive, and may be misdiagnosed with a learning or behavioral disability. 80% of learning is visual, so it`s critical they are seeing clearly well before they enter kindergarten.
Early intervention means getting an eye exam as early as 6 months of age or even earlier if you are noticing any eye concerns. An eye exam can help reduce and even prevent future vision problems. Alberta Health covers eye exams for children between the ages of 0-18 years. Best of all, if your little one needs glasses, we carry indestructible @nano.vista frames as seen on our beautiful twins. #infanteyeexam

Are you eyes feeling gritty, itchy, watery, red, stinging and/or burning? You may be experiencing dry eyes. If you are experiencing these symptoms, is time to book in for a dry eye assessment with our Optometrists as we have cutting edge therapies to help you improve your quality of life.
The M22 Lumenis Optima™ IPL is a revolutionary dry eye treatment that targets the inflammation in the meibomian oil glands which is a common underlying cause of Dry Eye Disease.
This light-based therapy selectively targets and destroys abnormal blood vessels along the eyelid margins which reduces redness and the level of inflammatory agents in the oil glands. IPL also gets rid of excessive bacteria and Demodex (mites) along the eyelid margins which worsen inflammation.
Lumenis Optima™ IPL helps to liquefy the oil in the meibomian glands in our eyelids that produce the oily part of our tears. Enhancing oil secretion from these glands can improve dry eye symptoms and slow down the progression of chronic dry eyes.
As an additional benefit, IPL stimulates collagen production which improves the skin’s texture and can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles while tightening the skin. Lumenis Optima™ IPL will gently and effectively treat eyelid inflammation with maximal safety, comfort and full customization to your skin type and condition.
Book in for your dry eye assessment to see if IPL is right for you. A reduction is signs and symptoms are noted after a few sessions and IPL can be done in combination with Ilux and Radio Frequency (RF). More to come on advanced dry eye treatments. #dryeye #ipl #lumenis

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month. An estimated 400 000 Canadians have glaucoma. According to the WHO, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world.
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that results in damage to the optic nerve. As it damages the optic nerve, there is a loss of peripheral vision gradually affecting central vision. There are several different types of glaucoma, most being asymptomatic. Glaucoma can only be detected by having regular eye examinations with your eye doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment can slow or arrest its progression. Glaucoma that is not treated may end in blindness.
Detection
At your yearly eye examination, our Optometrists are checking for signs of glaucoma by assessing your risk factors and checking your eye pressure, visual fields, and optic nerves. The ocular coherence tomography (OCT) seen in this photo is like a footprint of the eye. It is able to take precise measurements of the nerve and assess for any nerve fiber damage. This technology can detect disease up to 10 years before we can see the damage.
Prevention
Glaucoma can not be cured but it can be treated. Damage already done is irreversible but the disease can be controlled to prevent vision loss. Alberta Health care covers medical visits for patients with glaucoma when you see your Optometrist. So make sure to have your eyes examined early. #glaucomaawareness

Happy 2023! It`s a new year and many of us are looking to set our best foot forward and prioritize our health for the new year. This should include helping to keep our eyes healthy. We all want to look good and feel good. For many people, this may include a daily makeup routine. However, some makeup and makeup practices may be doing more harm than good, especially if you have dry eyes. Let`s take eyeliner for example. When applying eyeliner, be careful to avoid the waterline and the technique of tightling the eyes. This is because the openings of the delicate oil glands (meibomian glands) that produce the oily part of the tears are along the lid margins and can be blocked up with cosmetics. These oils are an important part of the tear film and help to prevent the tears from evaporating too quickly, which can lead to dry and irritated eyes. Additionally, toxic ingredients in makeup can also cause damage to these glands and the surrounding skin and ocular structures. It is best to avoid poor quality makeup that may contain toxic ingredients such as formaldehyde, parabens, and phenoxyethanol to name a few. Thankfully, there are some clean makeup options that are more dry eye friendly. We are excited to be introducing some new clean beauty options for the eyes very soon. Stay tuned! ...
